we're here in thailand! crazy wonderful times! our lovely group of girls arrived yesterday and we have been eating lots of pad thai and hitting the markets for important things such as fisherman pants and ribbons for yummy new camera straps - whee! i'm on inspiration overload with all the colours and flowers and yummies, and happy to have tara and her camera following us all around capturing all the magic...
(that guy was pretty happy to have me s a customer!)...will share more pictures soon, time for SLEEP!
Emily, the word you are looking for is 'zari'. Those ribbons are used for embellishing saree blouses, dance costumes, salwars and long skirts for kids (called paavadai in the South of India and ghagra in the North). They are found at every nook and corner here in India especially in South India (where I also happen to live). I've been sending a few yards of these as gifts to my friends in America and they love it. Didnt know you were partial to them too. If you are looking for any specific colour or pattern and you dont find it in Thailand, lemme know. I can check it out for you here in India. Traditionally the weave is done with silver thread that's been dipped in some amount of gold on a strip of cotton cloth. But maybe you already know this... Have fun in Thailand. Priya

Ooooohh, I am so envious, and so glad you're sharing! And having fun. Happy shopping! As an aside, Priya, thanks for sharing the information about zari. My husband is making another trip to India in 2 or 3 weeks and I've been trying to get him to shop for textiles. This might make it easier to move him in the right direction. He'll be in Mumbai, Ahmedabad & Hyderabad. So if I can't go to Thailand or India, maybe a bit of India can come home with him!

Thank you, Priya, for your information on Zari too....very interesting ~

Oh I am so jealous looking at that last photo. I looked everywhere for those last year, after seeing them on your blog. My whole trip was planned around ribbon, I ended up with a haircut due to a misunderstanding when looking for ribbon. Have fun and eagerly awaiting more photos.

Kimberly, I am sure you are in their thoughts.
I am wishing I was with you, but in reality I think I should be exploring my own backyard before thinking about my neighbours.
Have a great time.
